Fort Stanwix National Monument in downtown Rome, New York contains a reconstruction of historic Fort Stanwix on 16 acres. Construction of the original fort began in 1758 during the French and Indian War to guard an important trade route. The portage was known as the Oneida Carry and linked the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.
