Pipestone NM protects approximately 300 acres in southwest Minnesota, which includes quarry pits for a soft stone used to make religious and ceremonial pipes by American Indians, and many acres of tallgrass prairie which has never been plowed

Pipestone National Monument is a short drive off of I-90 which runs east and west across the country. It is located about 45 minutes northeast Sioux Falls, Iowa and 30 minutes north of Luverne, Minnesota.

Pipestone is a city of approximately 4000 people which was incorporated as a village in the late 19th century and a city in 1901. It sits in the southwest corner of Minnesota approximately three hours southwest of the Minneapolis – St. Paul area.

Pipestone National Monument was established in 1937 by an act of Congress

We stopped on our way out of town at Split Rock Burgers and Brews (???). We had an order of breaded pickle spears and a couple sandwiches.
