Balanced Rock and Grapevine Hills Road / Trail in Big Bend

Balanced Rock in Big Bend National Park is a group of large round boulders balanced in Grapevine Hills in the northern section of the park. It is reached by a six mile drive on a dirt road and a fairly easy one mile desert hike (2.2 miles roundtrip).

Balanced Rock is reached by Grapevine Hills Road, a 6.4 mile improved dirt road to the Grapevine Hills trailhead. It begins 3.3 miles west of Panther Junction Visitor Center, just northwest of Chisos Mountains Basin Junction. It is is generally accessible by all vehicles. The road continues past the trailhead to Grapevine Spring and two backcountry campsites but may require a high-clearance vehicle.

The Grapevine Hills Trail is a 2.2 mile roundtrip hike to Balanced Rock. It is a desert hike that starts at the trailhead parking area, follows a gravel wash and finishes with a steep climb in the last quarter mile.
