Cathedral Valley in Capitol Reef National Park

Cathedral Valley is a remote section of Capitol Reef National Park in the northern area named in 1945 for the eroded sandstone shapes which resemble Gothic cathedrals. It contains a primitive campground.

Cathedral Valley includes a long, narrow valley called South Desert, monoliths named the Walls of Jericho and the Temples of the Sun, Moon and Stars, an exposed mound of selenite crystals called Glass Mountain, and a Gypsum Sinkhole.

The Cathedral Valley Loop Tour offers visitors a 57.6 mile drive through the area. However, Hartnet Road requires fording the Fremont River near Highway 24. In the Spring and Summer, it can be impassable to even high-clearance four wheel drive vehicles.
