Tunnel Log in Sequoia National Park

Tunnel Log is a popular attraction in Sequoia National Park located on Crescent Meadow Road. It is a fallen sequoia tree that contains a 17 foott wide and 8 foot high hole which is sufficient for cars to drive through. It is the only tree that you can drive through in Sequoia National Park.

The giant sequoia fell in 1937 before the Civilian Conservation Corps cut the tunnel through it the next summer to attract visitors. It stood 275 feet tall and was 21 feet in diameter at its base when it fell.

There is a bypass in the road for taller vehicles.

There was another popular tree you could drive through in Yosemite National Park in the Mariposa Grove. The Wawona Tree was cut in 1881 as a tourist attraction and stood until it fell during a storm in the winter of 1968-1969. It was approximately 2100 years old when it fell. The National Park Service has no plans to replace the Wawona Tree.

Tunnels through trees were popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
