Toroweap Overlook & Tuweep Campground on the Grand Canyon North Rim

The Toroweap Overlook offers incredible views of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River along with remote camping in Tuweep Campground.

The overlook showcases a sheer drop of 3,000 feet to reach the Colorado River – the only place in Grand Canyon National Park where the river can be seen vertically below. From the edge looking west, the largest rapid of the Colorado River inside Grand Canyon National Park is visible.

The Toroweap Overlook is located in a remote area of Tuweep 55 miles west of the North Rim Visitor Center. There is no water, gas, food, lodging or phone service. Allow two to three hours of driving time to reach Tuweep from AZ 389, which travels between Fredonia, Arizona and St. George, Utah. No vehicles or combinations longer than 22 feet are permitted.

The roads to Torweap are rough and unpaved. There are three routes to the area – 61 miles from Fredonia, 56 miles from Colorado City, and 90 miles on the Main Street Route from St. George, Utah.

Toroweap is near the Tuweep Campground. There are nine campsites and one large group campsite for seven to eleven people. Advance permits are required to stay here and the permit cannot be issued on location at Tuweep. There is no water available or modern facilities. Fires and charcoal grills are prohibited. Composting toilets are provided.

There are two hiking trails at Tuweep. The Tuckup Trail travels three miles to Cove Canyon from the Tuckup Trailhead. The Saddle Horse Loop Trail is a 45 minute loop offering spectacular views of the Colorado River.
